History and Story of Millets

Millets are traditional grains, grown and consumed in the Indian subcontinent for over 5000 years. References to millets appear in ancient texts of Yajurveda, including foxtail millet (priyangava), Barnyard millet (aanava), and black finger millet (shyaamaka). These grains, native to India, are popularly known as Nutri-cereals. Millets like sorghum, pearl millet, and finger millet are major types, while foxtail, little, kodo, proso, and barnyard are minor millets.
